TUBE FEEDERS: A simple way to feed birds. The clear tube (#DYCJTHM23Y SHOWN) lets you see when a refill is needed and they are easy to clean with a brush and refill. A smaller perching area attracts smaller species of birds like Sparrows, Finches, Nuthatches, Chickadees and Titmice. If you want to target Goldfinches only, get the tubes with the tiny holes for thistle seed. The spiral perch tube feeder provides more perches and feeding ports to accommodate more birds. It will also draw the larger birds like Cardinals and Woodpeckers. Add a plastic seed tray to catch seed and keep the yard clean under the feeder.
HOPPER FEEDERS:A good example of hopper feeders are the traditional house shaped feeders #HF7536 , (SHOWN). The seed is poured inside and flows into the feeding trough as needed. Hopper feeders hold a fair amount of seed, and keep the seed dry and fresh. They can be hung or pole-mounted. They also provide a larger perching area for small birds and larger species like Cardinals. Hopper feeders come in a variety of sizes and some even have suet cages mounted on the side. The Songbird Essentials recycled plastic hopper feeders have the decorative look of a wooden feeder. These feeders are so sturdy they come with a Lifetime Guarantee and helps keep the plastics out of land fills!
16 inch #30034 Seedhoop Tray (separate from feeder), also available in 30" diameter #13921
TRAY STYLE FEEDERS:Tray style feeders are an anything goes type of feeder that allows you to toss in all kinds of seed. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can be hung, mounted on poles or windows, or placed on the ground on short legs. The ground trays will attract some birds that prefer feeding on or near the ground, like Quail, Doves, Carolina Wren, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Towhee, Sparrows and Juncos. Fly-Thru feeders are basically a tray feeder with a roof to keep the weather off. Species that tend to be more skittish may prefer trays because they offer greater visibility and escape routes in any direction. The Seedhoop Tray in photo is a "NEW" product that you can purchase separately and it adapts to any feeder, saving you a lot of money on wasted seed that falls to the ground. The 16" diameter is shown below also in our "Featured Items".

WOODPECKER FEEDERS:Woodpeckers can be targeted with the Songbird Essentials wooden and metal peanut feeders. The wooden feeders are oriented horizontally so the Woodpeckers fit nicely and can peck away at the seeds and nuts behind the metal mesh. The sturdy metal tube (shown) has large holes for our Woodpeckers Nut Mix. A wide variety of woodpeckers can be expected to visit, including Red-headed, Red-bellied, Downy and Hairy in addition to Northern Flicker and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

CLINGERS ONLY: To avoid large birds and pesky House Sparrows, use the clinging style feeder. Smaller birds that are adept at clinging, like Goldfinches, Chickadees and Titmice, have no problem hanging on the feeder to grab a seed. Use a window hook and enjoy having breakfast with the birds!
BEST32 Bottle Style
HUMMINGBIRD FEEDERS:Their are hundreds of styles of hummingbird feeders which operate the same way. Fill them with fresh Nectar and keep the portals clean and you will have hummingbirds visiting very soon. The old standby is the bottle style feeder. Simple, adequate and inexpensive. Bottle sizes range from 8 oz. to 32 oz. Go to "Bird Feeders" in our navigation menu and then click on sub-category "Hummingbird Feeders". You will find every shape and size feeder on the market! Let me again stress the importance of keeping the nectar clean and the portals clean. Hummingbirds do not like ants or any contaminates in their nectar. They will avoid your feeders if they are contaminated!
Hummingbird Helper ( A source of nesting material for Hummingbirds in a convenient holder. Manufactured by Songbird essentials and sold on our web site, birdseedbar.com, under accessories.)
This new product has a story behind it. In 1995 Dan Brown¡¯s Hummer House was discovered near Christoval, Texas. The story was told that Dan had a very large population of nesting Black-chinned Hummingbirds. A group of people decided to take a few photos of his feathered residents. They were not disappointed. In a one-hour walk around they found 15 active nests within a few hundred feet.
The primary reason ¨C not surprisingly ¨C was his consistent feeding over many years. The people saw seventeen half-gallon feeders during their walk. But, another reason was his encouraging the female hummers by providing nesting material; unprocessed natural material from a furniture factory nearby. Dan kept a big clump of this natural material tied to one of the many live oak trees on his property, in particular one he could see easily from his back patio.
The people witnessed excitingly as a female after female came up to the material, gathered a piece in her beak, and disappeared into the live oaks!
Jumping back to the present, we learned that Songbird Essentials had introduced a new product which they called, ¡°The Hummingbird Helper¡±. It is an open wire frame, 10.5¡å x 6¡å, holding the same material seen at Dan¡¯s house as the story goes.
One of our friends had to try it with a little encouragement from us! Our friend hung the material on the second-floor patio of her photo gallery. She had already begun drawing hummingbirds to her building area with a couple of feeders, which she purchased from, ¡°birdseedbar.com¡± of course! Within two days, females began taking the nesting material! This is from a two-story office building!
The nesting material at my house has been visited by Lesser Goldfinches which have been taking the material. We also have a Titmouse family utilizing the material.
We recommend this product! And because hummingbirds practice ¡°site fidelity¡± and return to the same site every year, you could see an increasing number of hummers in the future!
